Srisailam is referenced in the ancient Hindu Puranas, and the epic Mahabharata. Shiva’s sacred bull Nandi is said to have performed penance at the Mahakali temple till Shiva and Parvati appeared before him as Mallikarjuna and Brahmaramba. The temple is one of the 12 hallowed jyotirlingas; Lord Rama himself installed the Sahasralinga, while the Pandavas lodged the Panchapandava lingas in the temple courtyard.

Heroic legends from the Mahabharata and Ramayana are sculpted in stone on the temple walls and the Mahabharata epic refers to Srisailam as Sri Parvata – the blessed hill. You can hear the buzzing of a bee through a tiny hole in the Brahmaramba temple, where Parvati, in the form of a bee, slew the demon Mahisasura.

It also gained prominence in the twelfth century due to Sharana Movement and Vachana Sahitya headed by Basavanna. According to legends one of the srisailam caves is said to be the place where the most famous poet and social reformer Akka Mahadevi is said to have achieved salvation.Akka mahadevi caves

Akka mahadevi caves During 12th Century A.D. this cave appears to have attained it’s present name Akka Mahadevi caves after the famous ascetic, lyricist and philosopher, Akka Mahadevi who hailed from Karnataka. It is known that Akka Mahadevi did penance in this cave and worshipped the Sivalinga naturally existed in the deep and dark end of the cave.

How To Reach

The nearest airport and the closest main railway junction is that of Hyderabad. You can also reach Markapur by train and take a taxi, a rented car or bus till Srisailam.

The local bus service is available everyday. Cycle rickshaws and autos are also available in Srisailam. The best time to visit this place is between September and February.

Hemareddy Mallamma Temple

Hemareddy Mallamma Temple at Srisailam is Being Inaugurated on 26 May 2010. The Temple is built at Hemareddy Mallamma Kaneeru at Srisailam by Karnataka Veerashiva Reddy Samaj in adjoining ashram we can also see the place where she lived with cows etc .The place is a holy place and lakhs of pilgrims pray at this temple. The temple is situated about a half kilometer on the western side of the Mallikarjuna Temple Serene Srisailam, 232 km south of Hyderabad is situated on the banks of river Krishna. The 512 meter long Srisailam dam located here is surrounded by natural beauty. On the south bank of the Krishna river, in the Nallamalai forest, on a 457 meter high hill is the Bhramaramba Mallikarjunaswamy temple, it is one of the 12 ‘Jyotirlingas’ in India.

Srisailam Dam

Srisailam Dam is one of the 12 largest hydroelectric projects in the country. This dam is constructed across the Krishna River, the second largest river in India, in the Kurnool District of Andhra Pradesh and stands 300 meters above the sea-level. This dam stretches 512 meters long and has 12 radial crest gates with a height to hold the water level of 885 feet. It has a live storage of 274 thousand million cubic feet. Nearly 102 villages, located along the banks of River Krishna, in Kurnool and Mahbubnagar Districts, were flooded in the water during its construction.

Bhramaramba Mallikarjunaswamy Temple
The famous Bhramaramba Mallikarjunaswamy Temple located at height of about 457 meters on the southern bank of River Krishna is a major pilgrim spot in Srisailam hill town. This temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga temples in the country. The artificial Srisailam Dam having a length of 512 meter constructed across Krishna River and the Srisailam Wildlife Sanctuary with wealthy wild life are other tourist attractions in Srisailam.

Mahelle Teeratham
A very beautiful waterfall. It is about 50 km from Sri Sailam on the way to Hyderabad.
